Gloria In Excelsis from Second Setting This Gloria was adapted by Regina Fryxell for SBH Setting 2.
It was originally part of an old Easter Plainsong Gloria (Lux Et Origo Mass) sung in Latin by Roman
Catholic monks. Part of the melody can be found in the Sanctus of two Roman
Catholic masses in America today. Click here to hear the original...Gloria
X. s. (3m09.2s - 1109 kb) Early Lutheran pastor Nicholas Decius adapted it for Lutheran use in German churches. It was used for several years, until phased out and forgotten. Fryxell discovered it in an old German hymnbook when she was crafting her setting beginning in 1948. She had found that this Gloria had been used in Scandinavian Lutheran churches as well. She carefully matched the words and the music, making as many as 20 revisions on the piece to get it just right. She would gather people at Augustana College-Rock Island to sing it for her and to get feedback in order to make adjustments. It became beloved to Lutherans in the ALC and LCA and inspired the work in the LBW Setting Three completed by the ILCW committee. (The new ELW setting 5 has it on page 158, along with another piece from Decius on page 159) The harmony that Fryxell crafted for this piece is haunting, and tugs at the heart.
